Make and Mend

2010 is the year of the lamb. Not really, but it certainly is the year of Pet Lamb Patisserie, the cupcake company I run with a friend. Last weekend we were asked to do the Make and Mend Market in Newcastle, a great medley of handmade, vintage and incredibly original stalls all ran by like minded people! My very favorite was Paperfaerie, one of our lovely Craft Mafia sisters who specialises in modifying old books into amazing and unique sculptures. Gotta get me one of those.

The market was a roaring success leaving us sold out by 2pm! Unfortunately, I had to leave early due to illness but my partner in crime handled the baying crowds just fine without me ­čÖé

Here’s a few of my very favorite treats from the market…

Vegan Red Velvet Cupcakes, went down a storm with dairy eaters and vegans alike.

The sweetest cupcake that ever lived. A marshmallow filled cake with marshmallow frosting.

The Elvis! The star of the Star and Shadow Cinema! A chocolate chip banana cake topped with peanut butter frosting.

Vanilla cupcake topped with vanilla butter cream and a lovely valentines fondant heart!

Rocky Road! Because everyone loves Nigella’s Rocky Road!

And don’t worry, you purest among you. Pet Lamb do offer a selection of pastry based products including lemon and filled fruit tarts. They’re just harder to transport to markets and such ­čśë

    I can see why you sold out. It all looks delicious! I have always dreamt of having a cake stall at the markets but nearly every market on the Gold Coast already has one. I think it would be super fun though.

    Oh my gosh, I went to Make and Mend, how did I manage to totally miss you out? ­čÖü We didn't get there til 3.30 mind and kind of rushed through, so maybe that's how. Very sad now though!

    Love the cupcakes!!! The Elvis looks simply amazing!! I have to ask though, I am just starting out. I am pretty much self taught, the other night I tried to make a butter cream frosting and put fondant hearts in them. Like the ones you have pictured. They looked cute. In the morning, the had wilted. What did I do wrong?? Was it humidity in my house? How long should I have let the fondant dry before attempting to get it to stand??Thanks for any help, and by the way I am in love with your work!!Cathy

    Hi Cathy,Thanks so much for your comment, that's so sweet!The moisture from the buttercream dehydrates the fondant causing it to return to its original, soft state. The only way around this is to apply the fondant hearts just before you need to cakes. Mine did the exact same thing but luckily I had back up hearts. Katie xox
